Edwina Nelson makes complex paintings whose subject matter is perhaps ultimately a contrast between perceived perfection and imperfection in nature. Guided largely by intuition, she nevertheless works within precise parameters – she edits heavily from multiple perspectives and then magnifies her compositions. While realistic, the works are still illusionistic, floating in fields of negative space while rendered with sharp attention to subtle details such as variegated highlights, syrupy blooms and withering dried up bits. Her obsessively rendered portraits are both expressive and witty. The results convey balance and time, like a palpable psychedelic memory.
